Why should I get an amateur radio?

When all other communications fail (cell phone service, emergency services, etc) amateur radio is the only means of communication left, as proven in many previous catastrophes.

Whats the difference between Citizens Band (CB) and Amateur Radio?

CB radios are limited to 4 watts of transmit power and therefore cannot transmit as far as amateur radio (although with the right atmospheric conditions, CB radio can enjoy a phenomena known as “skip”). CB is also limited to a narrow range of channels in the 11 meter band, where as amateur radio can operate in many different bands (HF, VHF, and UHF).

What is the difference between GMRS and amateur radio?

GMRS is limited to 22 fixed channels in the 70cm UHF band. Power output is limited to 5 watts (unless it is a repeater, which is limited to 50 watts). Amateur radio can operate on many different bands with no fixed channels, and operate up to 1500 watts in most cases (there are some power restrictions on some of the bands).

Where did the term “ham” come from?

In the early days of telegraph, operators that were not  very good were coined to be “ham fisted” as a deragatory label. This later extended to amateur radio operators, who embraced the label and have used it ever since. At least this is one legend. Another legend is that the term came from the initials of 3 scientists: Heinrich Hertz, Edwon Armstrong, and Guglielmo Marconi. You choose which to believe.

How much does it cost to get started?

Exams are mostly free (although some clubs will charge a nominal fee to cover expenses). You can purchase a radio for as little as $35 (Chinese handheld). From there you can spend as much as your budget will allow!
