Scouting and Amateur Radio
Amateur radio has been part of scouting since the introduction of the Radio Merit Badge in 1918. Today, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can earn merit badges for amateur radio combing STEM with outdoor activities.
An annual Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) is held every year on the third weekend of October connecting Scouts from all over the world. Amateur radio operators regularly participate on the air providing contacts for millions Scouts as they participate in the Jamboree.
Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF) also known as Fox hunting is another popular activity for both Scouts and amateur operators alike. Fox hunting uses amateur radio equipment and directional antennas to find hidden transmitters hidden in outdoor locations (Fox hunting has been around for decades as a favorite challenge for operators).
There are many amateur radio operators that are also Scout leaders, providing great leadership and expertise in amateur radio.
